Monarch Butterfly Unit

Do you know how to tell a male and female butterfly apart?  Do you know the function of a proboscis? If not, ask a third or fourth grader! They recently completed a unit covering butterflies in Ms. Marnin’s science class.  Students learned about the life cycle stages, body parts, and migration routes of a Monarch butterfly.  This year, Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Potter donated a cage of chrysalises so the children could watch butterflies hatch in the classroom.  The students were proud to release three females and three males.  Ms. Marnin had an encounter with a snake and didn’t remember to look at the gender of the seventh butterfly. Students enjoyed hearing about the snake story so she was forgiven.
