K-2 Field Trip

The kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd graders visited Shatto Dairy in Osborne, Missouri on May 1st. They milked Loreli the 4yr old Holstein cow and learned that she produces 16 gallons of milk per day, and she drinks a bathtub full of water every single day! They got to see how cows were milked and tested the milking machine on their thumbs.  They also got to pet three newborn baby heifer calves.  They tasted butter and milk (chocolate, banana, strawberry, cotton candy, root beer, and cookies and cream) and learned about homogenization and pasteurization. It takes 700 lbs of flavor powder for every tank of milk produced!  They also saw the wind turbines on the way to Shatto Dairy.
